Geisha 5
20 x 20 cm
This series of Geisha paintings began by chance, rediscovered while leafing through an old book during an attempted clear-out.
Inspired by the late Japanese artist Kitagawa Utamaro, the work quietly echoes the mood and sensitivity of his prints.
It’s less about costume or exoticism, and more about presence. About surface and pattern. About the fragile balance between stillness and performance... the pause between moments...

Back to the future...
The single spark which prompted all this work was seeing how inkjet inks sat on Japanese fibre paper.
I found the aesthetic of the ink bleeding slightly onto the soft fibre and the colours losing intensity very seductive so it wasn't long before I started exploring the possibilities...
it started with a pic...
An image of the original painting is created and then digitally enhanced using Procreate.
I created a monster...
This digitally enhanced image is then printed on Japanese fibre paper.
in concert(ina) with...
The digitally enhanced print is then layered with one or more pages from a concertina sketch book and this combined image is then printed again.
what was is now...
The combined print is then overpainted in the studio to achieve the desired result.
the finishing touches
The finished work is then framed in a black & gold shadow gap frame, echoing the Japanese aesthetic.

The home studio collection
“When trying out new ideas or exploring new themes, it makes sense to work on a small scale. However, I know that, as far as my own work is concerned, I put as much thought and effort into my small paintings as for any of the bigger pieces. And, in fact, sometimes the smaller works, have a spontaneity or 'va va voom' which can be hard to replicate in larger work so I’m delighted to have found an exclusive outlet for these smaller works which are such a vital part of my creative output.”
