Angel 2
20 x 20 cm
When Basquiat's 'Untitled (skull)' painting sold for a record-breaking sum in 2017, it prompted me to look again at the language of his work: the crowns; fractured heads; text fragments; boxing references; and the raw urgency of his mark-making. One painting in particular resonated - it featured the comic book heroes Superman, Batman & Robin, and the Lone Ranger.
As a boy, I was obsessed with Superman comics and constantly copied drawings of him in flight... so the urge to borrow Basquiat’s freedoms and reintroduce these iconic figures into my own painting was too strong to resist and I found that I revelled in the expressive licence he allowed himself...
...So much so that, from time to time, I've returned to the subject to channel my inner street-cool kid from the Upper East Side (Lochee)…

Back to the future...
The single spark which prompted all this work was seeing how inkjet inks sat on Japanese fibre paper.
I found the aesthetic of the ink bleeding slightly onto the soft fibre and the colours losing intensity very seductive so it wasn't long before I started exploring the possibilities...
The Orignial
A large canvas original painting from 2018 ('Pablo's doves') that included both Picasso and Basquiat inspired characters.
The Crop
The image is digitalised and re-composed through cropping. These cropped images are printed onto Japanese fibre paper.
Once printed onto this paper, the image softens - the colours sink slightly, the blacks lose their hardness, and the edges feather.
The surface provides the creative spark...
The Re-Work
The Japanese fibre paper is bonded to a stretched canvas and the re-working begins...
"The idea isn't to reproduce or improve the original... It's almost as if the fine paper serves as a new skin allowing the work to become autonomous from the original..."

“When trying out new ideas or exploring new themes, it makes sense to work on a small scale. However, I know that, as far as my own work is concerned, I put as much thought and effort into my small paintings as for any of the bigger pieces. And, in fact, sometimes the smaller works, have a spontaneity or 'va va voom' which can be hard to replicate in larger work so I’m delighted to have found an exclusive outlet for these smaller works which are such a vital part of my creative output.”
