"As a young art teacher in Dundee, I ran the school Hillwalking Club and most Sundays saw a hardy group of pupils and teachers ‘heading for the hills’.

More often than not, we'd head to the Angus Glens where, in little more than an hour, you would have gone from the inner city and through the rich agricultural hinterland to find yourself in a surprisingly rugged and challenging environment.

The drive from Glen Clova to Glen Prosen runs alongside the River Esk and these paintings try to reimagine the little idyllic cottages we passed sitting beside the river with the purple peaks of Mayar and Dreish awaiting ahead…

“…When trying out new ideas or exploring new themes, it makes sense to work on a small scale. However, I know as far as my own work is concerned, I put as much thought and effort into my small paintings as any of the bigger pieces. In fact sometimes the smaller works have a spontaneity or 'va va voom' which can be hard to replicate in larger work.

The economics of Gallery representation can make it difficult take these smaller pieces any further so I’m delighted to have found an exclusive outlet for the smaller paintings which are such a vital part of my creative output. The arrangement with BoagArt Publishing showcases work which might never have had a public viewing…”

About the Artist

Francis was born in Dundee and studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in the late sixties where his tutors included Alberto Morrocco and David McClure, whose influences can be readily seen in his love of vibrant colour and the sensuous application of paint.

Upon leaving university, Francis became a secondary school Art teacher. Francis continued to paint throughout a successful teaching career before he returned to higher education to undertake a MA at Grays School of Art in 2000. Developments in his work during this introspective period met with great enthusiasm in the commercial gallery market and demand for his work increased. This enabled him to leave education and become a full-time, professional artist in 2001.

Since then, Francis has worked steadily to establish himself as one of the leading figures in a new generation of “Scottish Colourists”, with his work exhibited widely throughout the UK and as far afield as Europe, Russia and the US
